Why — All Garifuna negative verbs carry the prefix m- (analyzed as m-, not ma- — the following vowel varies) attached to the NEGATIVE STEM (N). Usable on the great majority of verbs regardless of semantic class: máfaru numuti 'I didn't hit him'; móumuguutina 'I didn't sleep'; magúndaatina 'I'm not happy'.
